AIS

An AIS is an important part of the safety equipment onboard and in many cases a requirement from the authorities.
Compared to a class B, the class A AIS updates the position of the vessel more frequently, can send other information along with the vessel position and has priority if the VHF-network is at maximum capacity. For that reason, Class A AIS's are required on larger vessels. Class B are available both as active and passive, i.e. using a transponder that both transmits and receives or just a receiver.
